Out-of-network ATM fees ($3–5 operator + your bank’s fee) are the real cost. Bank-branch ATMs of major networks are safest.

Watch for DCC in reverse when you get home: US-based online shops sometimes offer to bill your foreign card in USD… which is exactly what you want here. Direction matters: pay in the merchant’s local currency.
