Where the conversion trap actually is

DCC isn’t evenly distributed. Some countries surround every tourist sight with conversion-hungry ATMs; in others you’ll barely see a prompt. Thirty destinations graded by real exposure, each with the local refusal phrase and ATM intelligence.

High exposure

Conversion prompts are routine here, at ATMs, tills or both. Arrive with the refusal habit loaded.

Medium exposure

You’ll meet DCC in specific places (hotels, tourist retail, certain ATM brands) rather than everywhere.

Low exposure

DCC is the exception here, but your own card’s foreign fee still applies. Stay polite, stay local-currency.

Somewhere not listed? The rule is universal: pay in the local currency, and run any offer through the calculator. Exposure grades reflect published fee disclosures and sustained traveller reporting; see the methodology.
